carriage gateway, an architectural term referring to a kind of porch or portico like structure.

poseur
show-off, phony, poser, a person who pretends to be something he is not; an affected or insincere person: a wannabe

stew, dish of meat and vegetables that is cooked by simmering

pour encourager les autres
To encourage the other

pourboire
“for drink”; gratuity, tip; donner un pourboire: to tip.

prêt-à-porter
“ready to wear” (clothing off the shelf), in contrast to haute couture

première dame
“first lady”

prie-dieu
“pray [to] God”; a type of prayer desk

prix fixe
“fixed price”; a menu on which multi-course meals with only a few choices are charged at a fixed price

protégé/e
a man/woman who receives support from an influential mentor.  protected, covered, sheltered, guarded. Man/Woman who is under the protection or tutelage of another person

provocateur
challenger, challenging
